Words Are Containers for What We Believe

A+ A-
"You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks." - Matthew 12:34

The words we use say more about us than we realize. If you listen closely to what someone says, you will be able to determine what they believe. Even if they speak something other than what they believe, that also tells you something about them.

It's a Two Way Street
As mentioned above, our words reveal who we are and what we believe. What's inside eventually comes out of us through our actions and our speech. However, what we say also has the ability to change what we believe. Our minds place a higher value on the words that we speak than the words of others. How does faith come?

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. - Romans 10:17

Words are the things that change our beliefs. Therefore, when we hear words, our beliefs are affected. This is why it is so important to monitor what and who you allow to speak into your life. Even when you are doing the talking, it is important to say things that are positive about yourself. There are enough negative words against you and others in the world.

Action Steps
I don't usually give action steps; however, these actions are so beneficial to your success that I'm going to share them with you.

1. Keep a journal of everything you read, hear, and watch for one week. Depending upon your schedule, I would use increments of 30 minutes to 1 hour and focus on the highlights. Make a simple notation of whether it was encouraging or discouraging.

2. Review the list and count how many encouraging items and how many discouraging items.

3. Repeat this process until the encouraging items outweigh the discouraging items by a factor of 5 to 1.
