That's Why They Call It Looping

"Another generation arose...who did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel. Then the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord." - Judges 2:10-11

Patterns, or habits, play a critical role in determining our daily actions. I would venture to say that 90% or more of what we do on a daily basis is by rote. Just like putting the CD into the player, selecting the track, and pressing play, we live out scripts that were determined long ago.

You may have heard an alcoholic getting drunk refer to it as looping. Once the trigger occurs, the script plays. It goes something like this. "I worked hard today, I deserve a drink". Several hours later, the person is still sitting at the bar getting sloppy drunk. The next day, the person feels guilty for not being able to control their actions. They ask forgiveness of anyone that they offended the night before. Then, the trigger occurs. . .

You get the point, it is a cycle that happens over and over and over. This is the same cycle that the Israelites experienced long ago. First, they would rebel. Then, they would come under judgment or God would lift his hand of protection. Then, after the circumstances were too much to bear, they would repent. Finally, they would straighten up their act and be restored to right-standing with God. Unfortunately, often they would get comfortable in the shadow of the Almighty, let down their guard, and start the whole process over again.

To stop the loop, we have to break the pattern. Becoming aware that there is a problem is half the solution. We all have areas that we need to insert new behaviors. What area in your life needs a new script?
