The Right Planner for Your Personality

Over 2,000 years ago, Hippocrates created a list of four temperaments: Choleric, Sanguine, Phlegmatic, and Melancholy. Since that time, many have found that studying temperaments, or personalities, is a powerful key to individual and group effectiveness.

Having been in the Corporate environment for nearly two decades (I can't believe it's been that long), one of my favorite dissections are the four birds: Eagle, Peacock, Dove, and Owl. This is really another name for the temperaments that Hippocrates developed. If you want to find out your personality type, there is a free personality test (http://www.peterursbender.com/quiz/) online that takes less than five minutes.

Personality plays such an important role in our lives (the career you choose, your friends, your hobbies, etc.) that I can't believe I haven't shared how this applies to your planner before. So, here's a quick breakdown of the different personalities:

  • Owl (aka Analytical, Melancholy) - You love details. You are known as a thinker. You love to get things done, but only if they are done right. Accuracy is of the utmost importance for you. You tend to be introverted. Your preferred planner is very traditional with lots of lines to record the details. You are very comfortable with software, such as Outlook, to keep track of your life. You would really enjoy 68 Worksheets by Stephen Smith at HD Biz Blog.
  • Dove (aka Amiable, Phlegmatic) - You love to support other people. You would rather sacrifice yourself than offend someone. You have a deep desire to be liked by everyone. You are creative and have a great interest in how things work. You are often able to spot trends that others miss. You are usually the quiet one in a group setting. Your preferred planner is creative, non-traditional. You want something that is unique and different. You would really enjoy the 360 Planner.
  • Eagle (aka Driver, Choleric) - You are made for action. You see the big picture. People look to you for vision and results, and you deliver. You want to be the one in charge. If someone is going to step to the plate, it's going to be you. You are not afraid to voice your opinion (because it's right, after all). Your preferred planner is traditional or non-traditional. You would enjoy 68 Worksheets by Stephen Smith at HD Biz Blog or The Bubble Planner based on what you want at the time.
  • Peacock (aka "Let's Party Personality, Sanguine) - You are the life of the party. Everyone wants to be your friend and vice versa. You love to feel appreciated and make others feel on top of the world as well. You want to inspire others. You don't like to rain on people's parades. You are generally the most extroverted person in the room. Your preferred planner is whatever is available at the time. Whether it's a napkin or a notepad, you are able to adapt to any situation. You would really enjoy something cool like the Next Action Notepad or My Daily Bubble (Day Manager for Women).
So, if you want to work with your personality instead of against, take the test, and get to know the most important person in your life a little better - you!

Time Tip - Time Management is a Myth

This probably seems like a strange title coming from me since I make Day Planners. However, this is precisely what led me to design The Bubble Planner. Everyone, and I mean everyone, has the same number of hours, minutes, and seconds each and every day. Whether you are the President of the company or the janitor, you are bound by time. So, if you can't manage time, what can you manage?

Ah, that's the real question. There is only one person on this entire planet that you have full control over. That person is you. Thus, I submit to you that time management is really self-management. What can you do differently to leverage your time resource? The fact that time is finite (and virtually every other resource is dynamic) makes our use of it more critical than anything else. I encourage you to find ways to use your time more wisely. Don't waste your time or others. Before you send that e-mail that says "send this to 10 other people or you'll get zapped", consider the amount of time, collectively, that you'll be wasting. Before you invite someone to another meeting where they'll have five minutes of participation and two hours of trying to stay awake, think about this precious resource.
